LIVE CONSCIOUSLY

Living consciously means that we live completely in the present moment and perceive our experiences directly through our senses without filtering or labeling. It may sound impossible, but when we look back at childhood, we may remember experiences that were such pure consciousness.

As children, we experience every single moment as exciting and fresh and every sight, taste, touch, smell and sound is intriguing and new. But as we grow older we change the way we see and experience the world and adapt to the environment.

Conscious living means that we wake up and become conscious about everything we consume with our senses and what kind of impact it has on us. It is about appreciating ourselves as well as everything and everyone around us with greater clarity. Living consciously also means that we are creating our life consciously rather than drifting along passively.

Here are our TOP 10 tips to live consciously and turn off auto-pilot.

#1 Embrace the Truth
Learn to live the truth, even if the truth is uncomfortable. One of the most important steps to living more consciously is to stop telling yourself lies about who you are and what you should do to be happy. Take a moment and think about all the areas in your life where you aren’t honest with yourself. Then take gradual steps and learn to be honest with yourself as well as with other people and slowly but surely you will be able to come out on the other side.

#2 Ask Yourself What You Want
How often do you go with the flow and not take a stance or not have a preference. It’s time to stop choosing the way of least resistance and have an opinion. Ask yourself what it is that you truly want. Not what your partner wants, your family wants, your friends want or society wants, but YOU. What do you want? And keep in mind, it is okay to have an opinion. It’s okay to take a stance. And it’s okay to have a preference.

#3 Accept Yourself
We all have some inadequacies and shortcomings, however, that doesn’t mean we are incomplete or inadequate. Even with imperfections or perceived inadequacies it is important to remember that you are enough. No matter what everyone else has that made you believe that you are less than enough. Don’t fall for the comparison trap and start accepting yourself the way you are. You will feel a lot better about yourself and can start living more consciously.

#4 Ignore Society’s Demands
Every single moment we are bombarded with guidance and advice from society that will tell us what it takes for us to be happy and fulfilled. Get a job, get a house, get a partner, get babies… Society’s way is one way, but it’s not the only way. You have the power to choose the life you want to live depending on what’s important to you, so ignore society’s demands and live on your own terms.

#5 Say ’No’ More
Living consciously means that you gravitate towards the life you want to live and with that you place the power of choice into your own hands. One of the best asset to living a conscious life is to learn to say ’no’ more. Build your ’no’ muscle by practicing on smaller things like if you don’t want to eat a particular food or don’t want to attend a certain event. Eventually you will be ready to say ’no’ to the things that really matter like saying no to a toxic relationship, an overbearing boss or an unhealthy lifestyle.

#6 Treasure the Moment
Most of us live in a moment that has passed or in a moment that isn’t even here, yet. Treasure the moment that is here, now. There is no need to rehash the past or worry about the future. Live in this very moment, accept it for what it is and embrace whatever the moment contains. Your life will improve dramatically when you focus on the present moment and live it to the fullest.

#7 Be Mindful of Your Words
Know that words can hurt, so be intentional with your words and figure out a way to say what you have to say in a precise, kind way. Make it your mission to inspire rather than hurt and if words aren’t necessary in a particular situation, choose silence. Words have consequences, so choose your words wisely and be nicer with what you say.

#8 Live Every Day as If You Were Traveling
Whenever you are in a new place, you do everything to discover every single detail of your new environment. You become curious about the places, people and occurrences around you, almost like a child who encounters something new for the first time. You get in touch with foreign people, exchange experiences and immerse yourself completely in a foreign culture. Embrace that mentality to your own hometown as well. Be curious about the people, the places, the experiences and open your mind and soul by experiencing your hometown as if you were traveling.

#9 Practice Compassion
Be compassionate with yourself as well as with others. Let go of perfectionism and don’t hold yourself back by holding yourself accountable to unattainably high standards. Instead, vibrate love and release negativity. And the same goes for your interaction with others. Let go of judgment and feel empathy for other people. Put yourself in someone else’s shoes and seek to understand their point of view.

#10 Be Picky
Be careful about choosing your friends because we tend to become like the five people that are closest to us. So make it a point to choose positive, uplifting people in your life and let go of toxic and negative people. The same goes for food and entertainment. Food fuels our body and mind as does entertainment, so be very aware what you allow into your body and mind and make sure that it inspires you, spurs your creativity and stirs your soul.

Living consciously is about taking control of our life, thinking about our decisions and living a life we want rather than settling for the life that befalls us. Keep in mind, this change to live consciously won’t magically happen over night. It’s a skill, a lifestyle and an art that comes from a habit you build over a lifetime. But when you start living more consciously, your life changes dramatically for the better.
